Jump Start on College Savings?

During a recent forum, Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton floated the idea of giving every child born in the United States a $5,000 bond to help pay for college. She said:

“I like the idea of giving every baby born in America a $5,000 account that will grow over time, so when that young person turns 18, if they have finished high school, they will be able to access it to go to college.”

She didn’t mention how she might pay for this, but this is an idea that could drastically change college admissions. What do you think? How does a $5,000 bond sound to start your freshman year?

I think it is a brillant idea, only if it will not hurt the college process in the long run. This might increase college tuitiion and expenses.

Lots of things sound great but are so unrealistic. She only said it to make herself more popular with young voters. It will never happen and she knows it. Maybe we should be dealing with more realistic ways of funding college. I like your site but less politics, please.

I agree…that is very unrealistic. And suppose she did find a way to do this, college tuitions will increase, and her program will be useless.

I believe that this is a horrible idea and extremely unrealistic. There is no way that federal money could support a program with such a huge cost, and therefore the cost would go to voters. Now, would you rather fund your own education or spend many more thousands of dollars a year on everybody else, even those who don’t use it? It would drastically increase taxes, which is not necessarily a bad thing, unless it’s like this case, where they would most likely go up many thousands of dollars each year.

I give it two thumbs down.

I think that would be a good idea simply for the fact that all of our mothers and fathers have worked hard during their lives and supporting use to be profeesional individuals a little support would not hurt.

I too believe that idea is unrealistic! I like the thought of that, but who wants to pay more taxes to accommodate that idea???
