College Dress Code

Many of you deal with school-imposed dress codes on a daily basis at your high school. In college you can pretty much wear what you want to class. Three piece suit? Sure. Pajamas? Why not.

That’s not the case any more for students at Illinois State University’s College of Business. The faculty instituted a “business casual” dress code for all juniors and seniors. Said the department chair, Dr. Tim Longfellow: “We tried to come up with ways to enhance the overall professionalism of our students.”

What do you think about college dress codes? If you’ve got one at your high school are you looking forward to making your own wardrobe choices when you graduate?

I think that we should be able to dress how we want in college. College is where we are more independent. Most people (like me) have been wearing uniform to school since kindergarten.

I have worn a uniform since the sixth grade. I think that not having a dress code in college will help me express who I truly am. It will also be a big break for me.

I think a general dress code (such as the one imposed at Illinois) is a good idea. But anything stricter, e.g. uniform would be strongly opposed.

In the professional work place, dressing accordingly is both important for presentation and also for the respect of your fellow colleagues.

I think it is appropriate, at least for a business school. After all these particular students are being trained to work in corporate America, so why not dress the part?

  5. Gifford Says:

i have been wearing dress code/uniforms since kindergarten as well and am totally looking forward to being able to dress according to myself…..i like being independent and being myself and being able to express that.

I have always been told that college is a time for finding yourself. So how does somebody find themselves, and be individual if you have to wear a uniform? Expressing ourselves is how we FIND OURSELVES and BE OURSELVES!

I favor dress codes especially for business students.

  9. Jeff S Says:

I favor dress codes. I am a business major and I am shocked how students go to career fair and job interviews. I adopted my own dress code in my sophomre year, I traded in my blue jeans and t shirts (sold them off at a used clothes store and aplied the proceeds to get dress slacks, khakis polos and dress shirts sweater vest and the like. I have not looked back since, nor do I regret it..

Uniforms are way out of line. I mean I do think people should dress appropriate for college. However, I dont feel as though there should be uniforms because not all careers require a strict dress code.
