Today is kind of a big deal.

Cappex is one year old! OK, technically Cappex turned the big 1 yesterday. But today is Friday, it’s Leap Day and we’re celebrating. Feel free to help yourself to the virtual cake above. It’s virtually delicious.

At Cappex, our goal is to bring colleges to students. We know there is a better way to find the right college. To all the students who learned there are colleges looking for them on Cappex, we say thank you!

In fact, the first 10 students to drop by the comments section with birthday wishes will get an official Cappex cap. It’s our birthday present to you. That, and the promise that we will keep working to bring colleges right to your doorstep.

January was the biggest month ever for Cappex college scholarship deadlines. And now February is going to be the biggest month for Cappex scholarship winners.

We’ve got nine scholarship winners to announce. We’ll be unveiling the results in groups of three, so make sure the drum roll paces itself.

We recently announced the first ever Cappex Standout College Scholarship. We wanted to know what talents make you stand out.

And the response has been incredible. We’re talking mind-blowing. We’ve received poetry, photography, singing, professional wrestling, backflips off vans. Every entry is fantastic.

We have been enjoying your work so much that we are going to begin sharing some of the entries here on the blog. These are just some examples of the many talents Cappex students have to offer.

Do you have a standout talent? Send it to standout@cappex.com. This fall we are giving a college scholarship to a student with a standout talent. You must have a free Cappex profile to be eligible.

First up is Brinkley Sharpe. She is a regular contributor to her hometown newspaper. She’s covered a ranch that helps teens fight eating disorders and looked at the impact business development could have on local teenagers. That’s some serious news writing!

And finally, Nick from Burbank shows off his spectacular sign-spinning skills.

To everyone who applied for a Cappex college scholarship: We will be announcing the winners very soon. We had a tremendous response to the awards, and lots of outstanding students. We will announce the winners of our biggest scholarship yet, the $5,000 Cappex College Scholarship, and eight other awards on this blog by the end of this month.

In the meantime, in case you missed it, Cappex just announced a new batch of scholarships. Our College Travel Scholarships are now worth twice as much.

The responses to our brand new Standout Talent Scholarship have been amazing. We’ve gotten essays and poetry and even some unexpected submissions. Keep sending us links that show off the talents that make you stand out to standout@cappex.com.

Since Cappex opened its virtual doors we’ve helped thousands of students connect with colleges from across the country. For the first time ever, students knew which colleges were interested in them before applying. Now, we are launching a new section of our site that will help students with every stage of the college admissions process.

We call it the Tips and Tools Page, and you can find it at Cappex.com/tips. It’s a simple name for great resources that will help you make sense of the sometimes complicated, sometimes frustrating college search.

Whether you are just beginning to think about college or are visiting schools and making final decisions, Cappex Tips and Tools can help you. We’ve got quick tips, explainers, checklists, videos and a host of other activities. We’ll be highlighting some of the features on the blog in the near future. Take it for a test drive and let us know what you think.

The headline says it all. Just as the biggest round of Cappex college scholarships expire, we’re coming back with a host of new awards.

You won’t find college scholarships like these anywhere else. There are a few important details to note, so pay attention.

First, our brand new Standout Talent Scholarship. What makes you stand out? Don’t just tell us. Show us! Post videos and photos of your amazing talents, whatever they may be, online and send them to standout@cappex.com. Feel free to use sites like YouTube and Flickr. If you’re a writer, post something on your blog or send it straight to us. We’ll post the top submission here, and the winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Our “GPA Isn’t Everything” scholarship is back. Not everyone has a 4.0 - the last winner of this scholarship didn’t - but anyone can volunteer or be a leader. For this $1,000 scholarship we are placing a priority on volunteer work, leadership and community involvement. Good grades don’t hurt, but we’re interested in more than that.

We are giving away more College Travel Scholarships. We’ll be awarding one for February, March and April. These scholarships winners will get $500 to visit a potential college. Cappex wants you to find the college that’s right for you, and you can’t do that unless you set foot on campus.

The deadline to apply for the GPA and standout scholarships is April 30. We will announce the winners shortly thereafter.

Anyone with a Cappex profile is eligible to apply. And since Cappex profiles are free there is no reason for you to miss this opportunity.
